In a bold new interview on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, Lizzo addressed the history of U.S. sampling laws, calling them “racially charged” and rooted in bias against hip hop culture.
She explained that in the 1980s and 1990s, sampling wasn’t just an artistic choice — it was a necessity for Black artists who lacked access to expensive studios and equipment. Hip hop pioneers often used snippets from existing tracks to create entirely new sounds, building the foundation of the genre.

However, Lizzo argued that lawmakers weaponized copyright law to restrict this creativity, disproportionately targeting Black musicians and hip hop producers. She pointed out that while other genres also borrow and remix elements, hip hop was the one singled out and penalized.
Her comments have sparked a heated conversation online, reigniting the long-running debate about whether sampling laws should be revisited to reflect modern creativity and technology. Fans and fellow artists are applauding her for speaking on a subject that has shaped — and in some ways restricted — the growth of hip hop.
